Earlier this week in Birmingham, Ala., former Johns Hopkins neurosurgeon Ben Carson revealed that he had received a visit from the Internal Revenue Service following very public criticism of President Obama at a National Prayer Breakfast earlier this year.

On Wednesday night, he appeared on the Fox News Channel’s “The O’Reilly Factor” to elaborate on his run-in with the IRS.

“They wanted to investigate some property, some investment property that I had,” Carson said. “And they came and found that all the i’s were dotted and all the t’s were crossed and then they said well let’s just do a general audit of everything and that was ok. And I say well let’s look at another year. And that was OK.”

O’Reilly suggested the possibility of the timing of the IRS was just coincidence, but Carson said it had never happened to him before.

O’REILLY: Maybe that it’s just a coincidence though.
CARSON: Well, let’s put it this way. I’ve never had anything before this with the IRS and nothing has changed. So they —
O’REILLY: You didn’t have to pay any penalties or anything. They just went through your stuff?
CARSON: Exactly.
