It’s the sort of paradox that would make the floating robot on Star Trek start yelling, “Error! ERROR!!!” But in this particular case, only one of these two notorious prevaricators can be telling the truth.
The other day, Durbin posted the following to his Facebook page:
Many Republicans searching for something to say in defense of the disastrous shutdown strategy will say President Obama just doesn’t try hard enough to communicate with Republicans. But in a “negotiation” meeting with the president, one GOP House Leader told the president: “I cannot even stand to look at you.”
What are the chances of an honest conversation with someone who has just said something so disrespectful?
Better than the chances of Dick Durbin using the word “honest” in a sentence and being taken seriously.
But here’s where it gets tricky. Jay Carney, a man who never met a fact he wanted to repeat in public, was asked about it yesterday. He flatly denied it:
No evasions. No parsing. No “I would refer you to [fill in the blank].” None of his usual tricks. It did not happen, he says.
Which liar is telling the truth? You make the call. I sure can’t.
If it’s true, if an unnamed Republican said such a thing to Obama in a private meeting, is it really worse than anything Obama has said about Republicans in public? And if it’s true, why wouldn’t Obama want everybody to know about it?
If it’s not true, what does it say about Durbin’s confidence in the Democrats’ own shutdown strategy? If they’re in such a great bargaining position right now, why make $#!+ up?
But then, the Dems just shut down the government (or at least a fraction of it) for weeks to avoid making any changes whatsoever to Obamacare. They called the GOP a bunch of hostage-taking terrorists and whatnot. And yet, now that everybody knows Obamacare is an utter debacle already, the Dems want to… um… make some changes to it.
Hm. Either way, none of it makes any sense. Welcome to Utopia.
