A mysterious man is travelling the country leaving massive tips — some as large as $10,000 — at restaurants across the country, signing all his checks with “Tips for Jesus.”

Fox News’ Bill Hemmer reported Thursday on the extraordinary generosity, which appears to be inspired by the man’s Christian faith. Tips have run from as low as a few hundred dollars to as high as $10,000, for a total of $50,000 paid out to servers so far.

“Are you sure this is what you want to do?” the owner of a bar in Washington asked the benevolent patron after he handed the bartender a $5,000 tip. “And the guy goes, ‘Absolutely. I’ve made a ton of money in my life and this is my way of giving back.’” The restaurant served more than 300 free meals to the poor on Thanksgiving.

The man’s “Tips for Jesus” Instagram account features “a smiling Jesus with thumbs up and the words ‘Doing the Lord’s work, one tip at a time.’”

Managers were initially skeptical that the tips were genuine. “I think I was more nervous than anyone,” said the owner of another restaurant, “because I pay [tips] out at the end of the night. But it went through, so they got their money.”

“Wonder where that guy was when I was slingin’ pasta on the West Side,” Fox co-host Martha McCallum cracked. “It would’ve been nice to see him.”
