California Obamacare exchange sent hearing impaired callers to ‘hot ladies’ chat line

Hearing impaired people attempting to sign up for insurance through Covered California could have gotten quite the surprise.

A page on the Covered California website that people use to help calculate the cost of coverage listed an incorrect phone number to a chat line offering “hot ladies,” according to a Sacramento CBS 13 report.

“Welcome to America’s hottest talk line,” the number greets callers. “Ladies, to talk to interesting and exciting guys free, press one now. Guys, hot ladies are waiting to talk to you. Press two to connect free now.”

The sex-line number 1-888-899-4500 was one digit off from the correct number listed accurately on the “Contact Us” page, 1-888-889-4500.

Sacramento CBS 13 spoke with Jeff Brown, a resident who was trying to sign up for coverage before the March 31 deadline, who explained that he ended up calling the number — listed as a line for the hearing impaired — when he called the regular number and got a busy signal.

“I’ll try this number again just in case I dialed it wrong —same thing,” he said.

According to CBS 13 when asked about the incorrect number, Covered California denied the error, but the CBS 13 had a screenshot of it.

“After investigating it further, we are reviewing the shop and compare tool as an incorrect number. We’re currently working to correct the problem,” Covered California later emailed the outlet.
