John Daly might have a bit of a Diet Coke problem

Golfing legend John Daly is known for his flashy pants, love of Hooters and penchant for excess. Daly has had to tone down some of the excess due to a lap-band surgery to lose weight in 2009, however his version of toning down is a far cry from what a normal person might do.

Daly told the Guardian that he hasn’t drank in six years, but still smokes around 40 cigarettes a day. He’s cut back on the soda though. He said, “The band won’t allow me to drink as many. If I don’t have ice, I can’t drink it. I can’t have it straight because of the carbonation. I have to drink it slowly and not out of a can, I need some ice. I used to have 26-28 cans a day. Now I have 10-12 at the most.”

That evens out to a conservative 2,160 milligrams of aspartame, an artificial sweetener believed to possibly cause cancer.

Daly also spoke about the younger golfers taking their health seriously and exercising. He thinks the miles of walking around the course are enough, saying, “Some guys want to do a little more cardio training; I can’t see me being allowed to smoke a cigarette on a treadmill. I don’t think they will let me into the gym if I do that. Will they?”

Never change John Daly.
