A Mexican man’s selfie turned fatal last week after the gun he was posing with for a Facebook photo accidentally went off.

Oscar Aguilar of Mexico City frequently snapped selfies for his Facebook page, which show the 21-year-old veterinarian posing with women, luxury cars and motorcycles according to a local ABC station.

Aguilar was reportedly taking another such photograph with a borrowed gun went it accidentally went off, fatally wounding him. According to local police, Aguilar was ‘waving’ the gun around and pointing it at his head, all the while unaware that it was loaded.

“I heard a gunshot, and then I heard somebody screaming and realized somebody had been hurt,” neighbor Manfredo Paez Paez told reporters. “I called the police and when they arrived they found that he was still alive.”

Aguilar was truing to snap a photo of himself holding the gun near his head when it discharged. The veterinarian wasn’t killed instantly, and died in an ambulance en route to a local hospital.

Private ownership of firearms is illegal in Mexico, according to the report.
