The San Antonio Spurs made history Tuesday when the team announced it was hiring the first woman assistant coach in league history.

WNBA veteran Becky Hammon will join the team once she retires at the end of the season. Details of the contract were not publicly announced.

“I very much look forward to the addition of Becky Hammon to our staff,” Spurs Head Coach Greg Popovich said. “Having observed her working with our team this past season, I’m confident her basketball IQ, work ethic and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs.”

Hammon is a six-time All-Star and the San Antonio Stars team leader in assists and three-pointers as well as second in points scored.
