As pundits speculate on whether or not San Francisco billionaire Tom Steyer will run for retiring California Sen. Barbara Boxer’s seat in 2016, some privately registered the domain names “SteyerFor Senate.com,” “.org” and “.net” last week.

“SteyerForSenate” was bought by a private entity with an address in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Jan. 1, according to GoDaddy.com. This news has only fueled speculation that the billionaire turned environmentalist will run for Senate in 2016.

Steyer’s political handlers also hinted he would make an announcement regarding his potential candidacy on Tuesday as the Senate debates approving the Keystone XL pipeline — the very project Steyer earned notoriety for opposing.

“Tom will likely have something to say on Tuesday” a person close to Steyer told Politico, adding that Steyer will likely make a final decision by the end of the week. Politico also notes that Steyer has made some 100 phone calls in the last few days alone.

Steyer has made his name funding environmental campaigns and Democratic candidates. He is most known for his bankrolling of much of the opposition to the Keystone XL pipeline, putting forward ads whose accuracy was challenged by media fact-checkers.

Steyer spent $20.7 million through his campaign group NextGen Climate Action backing Democrats in key battleground states last election — an effort that failed to help Democrats hold onto the Senate.

In total, Steyer spent some $73 million of his own money last election supporting Democrats in the 2014 election. He was the top political donor in the entire election, outspending the second-largest donor former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg by about $50 million.
