The original “Poltergeist” is a film horror aficionados place level with legends like “The Exorcist” and “Jacob’s Ladder,” and the forthcoming remake by equally genre-legendary director Sam Raimi looks ready to carry on that legacy.

If you missed the first go around in 1982 produced by Steven Spielberg and starring Craig T. Nelson, “Poltergeist” follows the now familiar theme of a middle class family moving into fixer-upper, which they soon discover is inhabited by some pre-existing paranormal residents none too keen on sharing their space.

The original broke new ground by going beyond the average haunting and imagining new depths of spiritual interdimensionality and psychological terror.

Find out if Sam Rockwell, Rosemarie DeWitt, Jared Harris and gory “Evil Dead” cult-phenomena creator Sam Raimi can deliver a whole new brand of horror when “Poltergeist” creeps into theaters July 24.
