A teacher in central Georgia has been “corrected” by her superiors after allegedly telling her students that President Barack Obama isn’t a Christian, and if their parents voted for him, they aren’t either.

The incident apparently happened at Dublin Middle School in mid-March, and came to the attention of school officials after parents complained. According to the parents, teacher Nancy Perry injected politics into her middle school classroom, denying Obama’s self-professed Christianity and adding that “any parent who supports him is not a Christian.” She also allegedly challenged students to “prove their Christianity,” though the meaning of this challenge is unclear.

According to a letter released by the local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, a conference between Perry, the school’s principal and upset parents was unproductive. Instead of apologizing, the letter claims Perry presented several-printed out web pages intended to support her in-class claims. Backing up Perry was her husband, a member of the local school board.

In response, the parents took their complaints to the school board, which finally prompted a reaction from the district’s superintendent.

“We work to build bridges with students, not build walls,” Dublin superintendent Chuck Ledbetter told local WMGT news. “Talking politics, especially giving political opinions, can be very divisive.” Ledbetter said the school was “taking measures” to ensure a similar incident doesn’t happen again.

Ledbetter says he is considering compelling teachers to take additional diversity and sensitivity training in an effort to prevent similar events in the future. However, it appears there will be no further punishment for Perry herself.

WMGT reached out to Perry, who described the claims about her as “untrue” but declined to offer further comment.
