Rutgers University has abolished all fraternity and sorority house parties for the rest of the school year following a series of alcohol-related incidents, including the death of a student last fall.

The ban applies to all house parties, not just those featuring alcohol. It affects some 86 different Greek organizations that have a presence on campus. At the time of the ban, six fraternities and one sorority were being investigated

“Rutgers takes seriously its commitment to maintaining a healthy and safe campus environment. In light of a number of alcohol-related incidents this year involving Greek organizations, the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs has placed a moratorium through the end of the semester on parties in fraternity and sorority houses,” the school said in a statement, according to NJ.com.

About 10 percent of Rutgers students are members of Greek houses, a total of approximately 4,500 students.

The move is only the latest effort by a school administration to send a message to Greek organizations. Just a few weeks ago at North Carolina State, alcohol was temporarily banned at most fraternity parties as a response to a scandal where one frat maintained a pledge book filled with racist and sexist language.  Dartmouth College, known for having a very strong Greek system, has tried to reign it in by banning all hard alcohol on campus. Other universities that have implemented temporary suspensions of frat activity include Clemson University and Johns Hopkins University. Famously, the University of Virginia also suspended all fraternities for nearly two months as a response to gang rape allegations printed in Rolling Stone that have proven to be a fabrication.
