A former New York teacher accused of spanking a female student 54 times with a ruler for sexual pleasure has been found guilty.
Thomas R. McCarthy Jr, 53, was found guilty of forcible touching after striking a female student 54 times on the butt with a ruler and making her count the hits aloud, the Post-Standard of Syracuse reports.
McCarthy has resigned from his job as a social studies teacher at Liverpool High School.
He had hired the 17-year-old victim to work at his law firm run out of his home, which is where he the jury ruled he abused and degraded her by hitting her in June of 2013.
The jury ruled that McCarthy’s comments while he hit her pointed to the sexual nature of the act.
McCarthy could get up to a year in jail and become a registered sex offender.
This verdict comes just as the oldest cheerleader in NFL history pleaded guilty to raping a 15-year-old boy in Delaware. She could face up to 15 years in prison.
