Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer threw a no-hitter — the second in Nationals franchise history — in Saturday’s win over the Pittsburgh Pirates but did so in slightly disappointing fashion.
Scherzer — in his first season with the Nats — allowed only one hit in his last start, and he picked up Saturday right where he left off; the 30-year-old right-hander carried a perfect game across 8 and 2/3 innings before grazing Pittsburgh’s Jose Tabata on a 2-2 changeup.
Despite losing his perfect game bid, Scherzer forced Pirates second baseman Josh Harrison to fly out to left field, completing his no-hitter in the process.
