During the same interview with CBS on Sunday, Republican Gov. John Kasich used the Bible to defend Medicaid expansion while dismissing it in the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision on gay marriage.

“As a big fan of that handbook, that the lord handed us, the old and new testament, there’s a lot in there John about our need to take care of the widowed, the old, the poor and the disadvantaged.” Kasich said while on Face the Nation.

His affirmation for the principals of the Bible, however, did not extend to gay marriage. While the governor, and possible presidential hopeful, noted he believed in the Christian version of marriage, it still wasn’t worth standing up for now that the highest court has ruled on it.

“I do believe in traditional marriage but the court has ruled and its time we move on,” Kasich said.

Christianity does stress the importance of charity and looking out for others. Traditional marriage, however, is also an important belief to many Christians. While the governor has not done much on marriage, he has been an adamant supporter of expanding Medicaid.

“The last Republican I can think of who expanded Medicaid was Ronald Reagan,” Kasich told NPR in May. “If other people don’t want to take the money, that’s up to them, but I got money I can bring home to Ohio. It’s my money. There’s no money in Washington. It’s my money. It’s the money of the people who live in my state.”

For using his religion previously to support Medicaid expansion, Republican governors Bobby Jindal and Nikki Haley have accused him of hiding behind Jesus.

Kasich’s office did not respond to a request for comment from The Daily Caller News Foundation.
