Ex-CNN anchor Lynne Russell has a strong message for gun control activists after her husband, former CNN reporter Chuck de Caro, saved the couple’s lives by fatally shooting an armed felon who opened fire on them in their Albuquerque, New Mexico motel room last week.

“If you don’t want to carry please don’t,” Russell told Fox 411. “Then, shut the fuck up about it. Make your own decisions.”

De Caro and Russell, who anchored for CNN and CNN Headline News between 1983 and 2001, had stopped overnight at a Motel 6 during a cross-country roadtrip. On her way back to the room after stepping out to her car, Russell was confronted by Tomorio Watson, a convicted felon from Tennessee.

Watson held a gun to Russell and forced her into the room. According to Russell, Watson demanded the couple’s possessions and grew so agitated during the robbery that he began shooting at de Caro, who is a former Green Beret.

De Caro was hit with three bullets, but he had a gun of his own and was able to shoot Watson, who collapsed in the motel parking lot and later died. De Caro underwent surgery and survived.

Russell, who is also a trained private investigator and carries a gun as well, called de Caro her hero and said that she is grateful for the Second Amendment.

“The discussion over the debate to own a gun is just ridiculous,” she told Fox 411. “As Americans we have the right to bear arms and as humans the right to protect ourselves. I’m sure that the man who shot my husband did not have a gun permit. Criminals will always have guns. The rest of us legally obtain our gun permits.”
