Jordan arrested an Iranian operative and thwarted a suspected terror attack as world powers continue negotiating with Iran over a nuclear agreement.
A state-owned, Jordanian newspaper published the arrest details Monday, just before the suspect appeared in military court in the capital city of Amman. Khaled Al Rubai, believed to be a member of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps elite Quds Force, was arrested two weeks ago, Haaretz reports.
Authorities found Rubai, 49, in possession of 45 kilograms of explosives in Jerash, just north of Amman. Rubai, an Iraqi national who also has Norwegian citizenship, is thought to have sneaked into Jordan through the Syrian border.
It’s not quite clear yet what exactly the terror suspect allegedly planned to target. Jordan’s State Security Court forbade the publishing of information on the alleged terror attempt and the trial, according to Khaleej Times.
Iran’s Quds Force was once implicated in an attempted attack on U.S. soil, The Washington Post reported. An Iranian-American approached a Mexican drug cartel to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the U.S. while he dined in Washington D.C. But the man approached a cartel member who happened to be an informant for the Drug Enforcement Agency.

Stephen Kappes, former deputy director of the CIA, warned that Quds Force leader, Gen. Qassem Soleimani, “is a killer of Americans” at the Center for Strategic and International Studies last week.
Negotiations are continuing between Tehran and six world powers over Iran’s nuclear capabilities this week, likely bypassing a second deadline for an agreement.
