Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry took a shot at New York businessman Donald Trump Thursday about why the real estate mogul is so popular among GOP voters right now.

“When you look at the celebrity of Donald Trump I think that says a lot about him. One thing I like to remind people is back in 2007 Rudy Giuliani was leading the polls for almost a year and I’ll suggest a part of that was his celebrity,” Perry said.

He added, “Fred Thompson was the other one. A man who has spent a lot of time on that screen. I’ve had my issues with Donald Trump. I’ve talked about Donald Trump from the standpoint on being an individual who is using his celebrity rather than his conservatism.”

Trump is currently eclipsing his GOP primary opponents in the polls. He will address attendees at the Red State forum in Atlanta, Ga. on Saturday. Perry will speak to the same attendees on Friday.
