A jury sentenced James Holmes, perpetrator of the Aurora, Colo., movie theater massacre, to life in prison without possibility of parole Friday.

The jury deliberated almost seven hours before making the decision. They could have opted to give Holmes the death penalty.

The jury requested Friday to review a 45-minute video of the crime scene after the shooting. The defense objected, but the judge decided to let the jury view the video of the graphic scene one time in the court room.

The dead bodies strewn across the ground were one of the last things in the minds of the jury before they made their decision.

The jury ruled Monday that the mitigating factors did not outweigh the aggravating factors in the case, which allowed the jury the possibility to deliver the death sentence.

The jury rejected Holmes’ insanity defense and found him guilty on July 16 of first degree murder for the 12 people he killed and attempted murder for the 70 more he injured in the July 2012 attack.

Holmes was also convicted of one count of possessing an explosive device after police say he rigged explosives in his residence to target authorities investigating his home.
