Men are allegedly raping women and children in European refugee camps, seeing them as “fair game” because they’re unaccompanied, women’s rights groups allege.
Activist groups and politicians are alleging a “culture of rape and violence” is taking hold at refugee centers, reported The Daily Mail. The camps housing the hundreds of thousands of migrants from the Middle East and South Africa are crowded, with men women and children sleeping next to each other and using the same toilets.
Seventy-two percent of them are adult men, while just 13 percent are women and 15 percent are children, the U.N. has calculated, based on reports from governments and the media. (RELATED: Most European Migrants Are Men)
Activists pointed to at least one camp in western Germany, where men are allegedly raping women and children, but say the problem is likely widespread due to the high potential for unreported incidents.
“It is a fact that women and children are unprotected,” a letter from four women’s organizations to the state of Hesse, Germany, where the specified camp is based. “This situation is opportune to those men who already regard women as their inferior and treat unaccompanied women as ‘fair game.'”
“As a consequence, there are reports of numerous rapes, sexual assaults and increasingly of forced prostitution,” the letter continues. “These are not isolated incidents.” (RELATED: NYT Chronicles ‘Desperate’ Migrants Flee From Denmark)
The Hesse camp holds about 5,000 asylum seeking migrants.
