Police believe the 20-year-old was murdered by her father and brothers, who thought she had brought shame on their family through the sex attack by three men.
What would possess a woman to have her own daughter murdered because she was raped? How could a mother do that to her own child? We may never know.
I’m worried about a backlash against Muslims. This honor killing and all the other honor killings like it don’t reflect on Muslims as a whole. They’re the real victims here. Sure, what happened to this young woman was awful, but is that really worth making another Muslim — any Muslim, anywhere — feel uncomfortable even for a moment?
