A recent outbreak of crime in Norfolk Naval Station military housing has families on edge, with some even saying they are too afraid to go trick or treating this Halloween.

The crime spree began with a string of car break-ins over the summer and hit near breaking point last weekend. Fom Oct. 23-25 police responded to seven crimes in a half-mile area, WAVY-TV reports. The crimes have included vandalism, assaults and theft.

“The small things we can let go,” Matt Hill, resident of Ben Moreell community told WAVY-TV. “Kids will be kids. But when it starts to become an issue where people are having their homes destroyed, things come out of their pockets and you have to worry about going to work. That’s when it’s too much.”

Hill’s wife said the families don’t want to let their kids go trick or treating this year because it’s not safe.

Military families in San Diego reported they were being targeted in a similar way last year, saying they suffered thefts and vandalism.

Lincoln Military Housing, which manages the Norfolk property, said safety is its top priority but it doesn’t have the power of a law enforcement agency.
