It’s a tradition in pro sports to haze the rookies. Some forms of common hazing include wacky haircuts, making rookies carry bags, or even forcing them to pick up the tab at expensive restaurants.

NHL Vancouver Canucks’ rookies Jake Virtanen and Jared McCann, however, experienced a far more terrifying hazing experience.

The day came when a decision had to be made about whether or not Virtanen and McCann would be sticking with the Canucks for the season, or if they’d be relegated to minor league clubs. Instead of just telling the rookies their fate, the coaches and players made them sit through an excruciating meeting where their play was berated — convincing the two, they were about to be sent down to the minor leagues.

That was until another player broke out in laughter, and welcomed them to the team.

At the end of the video, McCann told the media he was on the verge of crying from all the criticism from the coaches and players.

Well done Canucks, well done.
