New analysis from polling company YouGov shows young white men are seen as the worst ethnic, gender and age demographic in the United Kingdom.
Using 48 separate surveys and 10 different traits, young white males were found to suffer from the most negative stereotypes, with respondents saying this group was the least likely to work hard and the most likely to be frequently drunk.
Young white men scored the worst in five negative character traits and the second worst on five positive traits. The results will strike many as counterintuitive, with negative stereotypes popularly believed to apply mostly to immigrants and ethnic minorities.
“The people we regard as the laziest, rudest, most promiscuous, drunken drug-takers are white men in their twenties,” said President of YouGov Peter Kellner.
In the minds of those surveyed, white men in their 20s were the most likely to be promiscuous and ranked the same as young black Caribbean men for the most likely to take drugs.
The survey comes a little over a month after figures compiled by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) revealed that white British pupils were the least likely demographic to attend college.
The IFS report showed that 32.6 percent of white British pupils go on to college, with the next lowest participation rate being for black Caribbeans at 37.4 percent. The disparities between different groups are striking, with Chinese students in the lowest socio-economic quintile group, on average, are more than 10 percentage points more likely to go to college than white British students in the highest socio-economic quintile group.
On the other end of the spectrum, white British pupils in the lowest socio-economic group “have participation rates that are more than 10 percentage points lower than those observed for any other ethnic group.”
