A West Virginia police department decided to throw political correctness to the wind and post “In God We Trust” on its officers’ vehicles.

The Princeton Police Department said Thursday it will be placing “In God We Trust” on its police vehicles, The Bluefield Daily Telegraph reports. The mayor and city manager approved the decision, which will decorate about 20 vehicles with the message.

“Everyone has their opinion and this is our opinion,” Princeton Chief of Police John Howell told the Bluefield Daily Telegraph. “The one way I look at it is that police officers are looked to as guardians and we feel like that there is an ultimate guardian.”

The department is not paying for the letters and said anyone willing to donate to pay for them is welcome.

This isn’t the first time law enforcement has put the phrase on their vehicles, but it often comes with criticism from atheist groups. The Freedom From Religion Foundation has sent letters to police departments across the country complaining about the practice, but because “In God We Trust” is the national motto, a legal argument against it is difficult.

“We don’t want to offend anyone and we hope that this won’t,” Howell told WVNSTV. “We just want people to know how we feel and this is how we feel not only as the police department but as a city.”
