Donald Trump and Jeb Bush got into a heated back and forth regarding the proper use of eminent domain, causing the debate audience to boo Trump multiple times.

Saturday during the ABC Republican debate, Trump, standing by his approval of eminent domain commented that Bush was being a “tough guy tonight” when he was facing criticism for his approval of eminent domain.

The exchange began when Bush said, “The difference between eminent domain for public purpose, as Donald said, roads and infrastructure and pipelines, that’s for public purpose. What Donald Trump did was use eminent domain to try to take the property of an elderly woman on the strip in Atlantic City. That is not public purpose. That is down right wrong. And here’s the problem with that. The problem was, it was to tear down –”

Trump interjected, “Jeb wants, he wants wants to be a tough guy, he wants to be a tough guy tonight. I didn’t tee the property.”

“You tried and you lost in the courts,” Bush claimed.

Trump responded, “I didn’t take the property. The woman ultimately didn’t want to do that. I walked away.”

Bush doubled down, “That is not true, and the simple fact is to turn this into a limousine parking lot for his casinos is not a public use and in Florida, based on what we did, we made that impossible. It is part of our constitution. that’s the better approach. That is the conservative approach.” The audience loved Bush’s answer and applauded wildly.

Trump retorted arguing, “Let me just — you know, he wants to be a tough guy. A lot of times you’ll have — you’ll have — and it didn’t work very well with him.”

“How tough it is to take property from an elderly woman,” Bush questioned.

“Let me talk. Let me talk. Quiet! A lot of times [crowd boos] — a lot of times — that’s all of his donors and special interests out there,” Trump said. “So [crowd continues to boo] — that’s what it is, that’s what it. And by the way, let me just tell you, we needed tickets. You can’t get them. You know who has the tickets [for the debate audience]… donors, special interests, the people that are putting up the money [crowd boos]. That’s who it is.”

“The RNC told us. We have all donors in the audience,” Trump said. “And the reason they’re not loving me [crowd boos] — the reason they’re not [crowd boos again]– excuse me. The reason they’re not loving me is, I don’t want their money. I’m going to do the right thing for the American public. I don’t want their money. I don’t need their money. And I’m the only one up here that can say that. Eminent domain, the Keystone pipeline. Do you consider that a private job?

Bush responded, “I consider it a public use.”

“No, no, let me ask you, Jeb. Do you consider the Keystone Pipeline private? Is it public or private?” Trump shot back.

“It’s a public use. It’s a public use,” Bush said.

“Oh really, public use? No, it’s a private job,” Trump insisted.

Jeb doubled down, “It’s a public use. Established by the the courts, federal, state courts.

“You wouldn’t have the Keystone pipeline that you want so badly without eminent domain… You wouldn’t have massive factories without eminent domain.” The crowd booed Trump again.
