The Irish government is planning on granting asylum to 20,000 refugees without any vetting or background checks, according to a whistleblower running for office.

John Wilson, a former GARDA police officer turned whistleblower, made these allegations in his election platform for a seat in a local constituency. Wilson claims the government will grant asylum to tens of thousands of Middle Eastern refugees that are in the country without authorization. These people live “totally under the radar” and “pose a serious risk to our people and our country,” Wilson argues.

“In spite of this reality our Government is determined to grant asylum to initially 20,000 alleged refugees and migrants without undertaking any proper risk assessment, background checks or without putting any safeguards in place,” Wilson wrote according to Irish Independent. Wilson wrote that Ireland is following the token of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her open border, no-cap policy in regard to Syrian refugees.

“I fully accept that we in Ireland must play our part in dealing with this humanitarian crisis that is unfolding, but not to the detriment of our people as Angela Merkel has dictated that we do,” Wilson said in the manifesto.

Wilson further claims that Eastern European criminals are allowed to operate in the country, despite the government having authority to deport.

“A country without her borders can never be truly independent,” Wilson wrote. “Decent, honest and hardworking people are welcome but criminals and social welfare exploiters are not.”

Wilson rose to fame when he blew the whistle on irregularities in the Garda national police force’s penalty points system in 2013. The scandal forced Justice Minister Alan Shatter to resign.

It is not clear where Wilson got his information. The Irish government said they would allow 4,000 Syrian refugees to resettle in the country last September.
