Charles Evers, the first black mayor in Mississippi since Reconstruction, says he endorsed Donald Trump because “he shoots from the hip.”

In an interview on MSNBC’s “The Place For Politics 2016′ on Monday, Evers said he also supports Trump because “he’s a businessman. And businessmen, I think every elected official should know business to provide service for the people they serve.” (RELATED: Why Is Mississippi’s First Black Mayor Since Reconstruction Endorsing Trump For President?)

“We in Mississippi are one of the poorest states in the nation. And we are the catfish capital of the world. And we have to send our catfish to China to be processed. To me, that doesn’t make sense. Why shouldn’t we have a catfish processing plant here in Mississippi? Maybe Donald can help us to do that. We also need, I’d also like to see Donald Trump bring one of his casinos to Jackson.”

“We need jobs here. And the man, the main reason why I like him is he shoots from the hip,” Evers said. Trump “doesn’t have written speeches and all that kind of stuff.”

He later noted that Trump is a billionaire who “didn’t get there by sitting around waiting on welfare on the corner every month.”
