Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders lost the Kentucky Democratic primary on Tuesday, though according to Sanders himself Kentucky was one of two “great victories.”

“Let me begin by thanking the people of Kentucky and Oregon for giving us great victories last night,” Sanders said at a Northern California rally Wednesday.

He added, “in a closed primary in Kentucky, where independents cannot vote, we got half of the delegates in the state.”

Hillary Clinton won by a slim margin in Kentucky, 46.8 percent to 46.3 percent. In a campaign email Wednesday, Sanders wrote, “we won the Oregon primary and came to yet another virtual tie, this time in Kentucky. That’s 21 victories for us so far, plus three more virtual ties where the margin was less than one percent of the vote.”

Sanders has won 20 states. The 21st victory is from the Democrats Abroad primary.

The Sanders campaign has not returned a request for comment.
