Donald Trump says that former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich is “absolutely” on the shortlist to be his vice president.
Appearing on Fox News’s “Fox & Friends” on Friday, host Brian Kilmeade said, “Newt Gingrich is coming up in about an hour, should we tell him he’s on the shortlist for vice president?”
“Sure, why not. He’s a great guy, you might as well,” Trump said.
Co-host Steve Doocy followed up, “By the way, who else is on that shortlist?”
“Well, I’d like to tell you. You know what, Newt is such a great guy. He’s been such a great supporter and… he’s a fantastic historian.. but he actually said that nothing like this has ever happened in the history of our country. It’s one of the great phenomenons of all time. I was watching him and I said, ‘really,’ it’s pretty exciting. He’s a tremendous guy.”
Doocy followed up, “But [Gingrich] is on the short list?”
“Absolutely,” Trump said. “I’ll say yes because he’s been such a supporter. Anybody that supports me is on the short list as far as I’m concerned.”
Later, Trump noted that he would be making his VP announcement during the Republican National Convention in Cleveland.
