It’s very possible that Van Pelt is subtly trying to attack his coworker Skip Bayless, who is arguably the planet’s biggest critic of James. Safe to say that Van Pelt and Bayless couldn’t be further apart on this issue, but the three championship rings on his hand would suggest that Van Pelt is on the right side of history.
