A mother and her five-year-old son are recovering after she fought off a mountain lion this weekend to save his life.

The Colorado woman was inside when she heard her child’s screams from outside the house. When she ran outside, she found a mountain lion on top of her son.
“The woman charged the animal, yanked away one of its paws and discovered her son’s whole head was in its mouth,” the Associated Press reported. She then “reached into the animal’s mouth and wrestled her son’s head from its jaws.”
“She was able to pry the cat’s jaws open,” Deputy Michael Buglione said. “She’s a hero.”
“It wasn’t a big cat,” Buglione added. “Had it been a 110-pound lion — which I’ve seen around here — this would have been a much different story.”
The boy is in fair condition with injuries to his face, head and neck. The mom sustained minor injuries to her legs and hand, but both are expected to recover. Neither of their names have been released. (RELATED: Bikini-Clad Reporter Dives Into Ocean On Live TV — You Can Guess What Happens Next)
Federal and state wildlife officials later tracked down the male two-year-old mountain lion and shot it.
