Kenny Chesney had to apologize after he mistakenly said a police officer died during his concert this weekend.
The 48-year-old country star told thousands of his fans at Lincoln Financial Field that Christopher Dorman — the Folcroft Borough police officer who was shot seven times in the line of duty — had died.
“In the hospital on his bed,” Chesney said, “He passed away, but before he passed away he made a video that he wanted to come tonight so bad, and he said, ‘Kenny, please don’t forget me.'”
After learning what Chesney said, the Folcroft Borough Police Department put out a statement disputing it.
“OFFICER DORMAN IS ALIVE AND WELL,” a statement on the department’s Facebook read. “IDK WHAT KENNY CHESNEY WAS THINKING WHEN HE SAID THAT AT HIS CONCERT TONIGHT!! I HOPE HE MAKES ANOTHER ANNOUNCEMENT TO MAKE THIS RIGHT!!!”
When Chesney realized his mistake, he called Dorman and apologized.
“The idea that a hero like that, with seven bullets in him, would even think about me, I heard about it right before I hit the stage, and it stopped me in my tracks,” Chesney said. “Someone whose life was on the line, and after all that bravery? As anyone in the stadium knows, I kept pausing, trying to collect my thoughts.”
Chesney tried to make amends for his mistake.
“He apologized for last night and wants to take Chris out to a football game and grab some beers!! Thank you Kenny!!”
.@FolcroftPD He's doing great. Told him we'd watch an Eagles game & have beers one day. Here's to a speedy recovery! #dormanthedelcolegend
