A drunk illegal immigrant struck and critically injured a Texas sheriff in a collision Sunday.

Oscar Salmeron, 42, was in the process of fleeing another hit and run incident when he collided with Denton County Sheriff Jim Terry. Terry was off-duty, and on his way to work on his motorcycle, reports The Dallas Morning News. The United States Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) issued a hold on Salmeron for his illegal status before the events.

Terry received injuries including multiple broken bones. Terry had an operation Tuesday, and is scheduled to undergo two more surgeries Wednesday and Thursday.

Salmeron was chased down and arrested. He faces charges for intoxication and assault with a vehicle causing serious bodily injury. Salmeron was at fault in the two hit and runs Sunday evening, the last of which involved Terry.

Terry started work with the Sheriff’s office two years ago, and is a veteran, according to a GoFundMe created to help pay for Terry’s hospital bills. “Officer Terry is a veteran and a Brother in Blue,” the GoFundMe states. “He has served our country and community, now its our turn to support him in this time of need.”

One comment on the GoFundMe page from a fellow veteran said that Officer Terry is “a great man.” As of press time, the GoFundMe raised $2,405 of the stated $10,000 goal, from 41 donors.

“Thanks for teaching me what is ‘right,'” the veteran wrote. “Get well big boy. We are not done yet…”
