Retired Army Lt. Gen Michael Flynn, who’s considered a possible vice president pick for Donald Trump, said Saturday in an op-ed in the New York Post he was drummed out of the military for referring to the enemies of the U.S. as radical jihadis.
About two years ago he was summoned to meet the director of national intelligence and promptly told he was being kicked out of the Defense Intelligence Agency, according to Flynn.
Flynn asked the Director of National Intelligence Gen. James Clapper if his leadership was in question. It was not, so Flynn inferred he was let go because of his hardline stance against radical Islam.
“If our leaders were interested in winning, they would have to design a strategy to destroy this global enemy,” Flynn wrote. “But they don’t see the global war. Instead, they timidly nibble around the edges of the battlefields from Africa to the Middle East, and act as if each fight, whether in Syria, Iraq, Nigeria, Libya or Afghanistan, can be peacefully resolved by diplomatic effort.”
“This approach is doomed,” he added. “We have real enemies, dedicated to dominating and eventually destroying us, and they are not going to be talked out of their hatred.”
Flynn argued that talking America’s way out of war is not a real solution. Instead, the U.S. needs to deploy both military and political assets to crush radical Islam. Only will is required to crush their armies and crush their doctrines.
NBC News reported Trump is considering Flynn as a potential candidate for running mate, as Flynn has repeatedly emphasized the importance of national security and of directly naming one of the chief threats to the United States: radical Islam.
Flynn is currently a registered Democrat, but no longer believes the current Democratic Party is the same party of his youth.
“I grew up as a Democrat in a very strong Democratic family, but I will tell you that the Democratic Party that exists in this country is not the Democratic Party I grew up around,” Flynn told ABC News.
