An activist who organized a Memphis Black Lives Matter protest that shut down a highway was taken into custody Thursday afternoon.
Devonte Hill, leader from a Memphis protest earlier this week, was booked into the Shelby County Jail after police took him into custody, reports WREG. Hill had two outstanding warrants, one for driving with a suspended license and another that claimed he allegedly made a false report.
Hill led a protest in Memphis Sunday night that shut down the Interstate 40 bridge in Memphis, stopping traffic for about 4 hours, reports NewsChannel 10. The protest was supposed to walk towards the National Civil Rights Museum; protesters instead chose to hop over a barrier and block off the I-40 bridge.
Hill told straggling protesters to go home around 11 p.m. that night and told them that Martin Luther King, Jr. would have been proud of them.
“While we are compassionate to the inconveniences that this protest has caused the city, we are more than happy and excited that this protest was completely peaceful, no arrest, thus far have been made, and if Dr Martin Luther King, Congressman John Lewis or any other trailblazers in the movement of peace and equality were here tonight, they’d be proud,” Hill claimed.
The day after, Hill joined other members of the community to present city leaders with some demands he had. Some of Hill’s demands included funding more black businesses, culture and sensitivity training for officers, community policing.
