A political science professor at a small college in Pennsylvania has responded to a simple request to solicit interns with a declaration that Republicans are like “thugs” who are “ruining and insulting” the country.

Interested in recruiting college students for party activities, a field office for the Pennsylvania Republican Party reached out to each of the six members of Moravian College’s political science faculty.

Matthew Cicchillo, field organizer for the Lehigh County Republican Party, sent an email two weeks ago to professor Jean-Pierre Lalande. The email simply asked if he would be willing to forward flyers advertising the Republican Leadership Initiative, a fellowship program for young people looking to get involved in politics.

“This is a great opportunity for students to get involved in political campaigns at the grassroots level and I’m excited to get to work with hour next class of RLI Fellows,” Cicchillo said.

But Lalande didn’t merely decline Cicchillo’s request, he apparently thought the mere idea was immensely appalling. (RELATED: Professor Blames GOP For Orlando Massacre)

“I cannot encourage students to be republicans [sic],” Lalande said in his reply, which was obtained by The Daily Caller News Foundation. “It’s like encouraging them to be thugs!”

Lalande then added that, in response to Cicchillo’s email, he would be telling his students to back the Democratic Party instead.

“Now I definitely ask them to vote for the Democratic Party. At least they won’t be ruining and insulting the country.”

Cicchillo apparently sent no further emails, instead passing it on to state party officials, who in turn sent the email to TheDCNF.

Lalande did not respond to a request for comment.
