The Great Wall of China is one of the world’s most majestic and impressive structures…or at least it was until someone decided to ‘fix’ it.

Workers repaired and restored a 700-year-old section of the Great Wall by paving over it like a highway pothole.

The sad state of the wall can be seen clearly in the following tweet:

“It’s the repair job so ugly you can probably see it from space,” CNN said of the latest repair job.

The Badaling section of the Great Wall is the most popular section for the majority of tourists; however, photographers and adventurers tend to prefer the more “wild” sections of the wall.

While the older, deteriorated sections of the wall tend to have a certain appeal, local officials in Liaoning appear to have been unaffected by the wall’s unique beauty.

The 5.6-mile Xiaohekou section of the wall on Yan Mountain in Liaoning was pretty worn down before it was ‘restored.’

The Suizhong County Cultural Relics Bureau carried out the repairs in 2014. The bureau’s shoddy work recently came to light though after a series of pictures of the wall surfaced online.

The bureau justified their actions as “reasonable and lawful maintenance.” The work was carried out to keep the wall from falling apart, explained Sina News. Heavy rains reportedly threatened the stability of the wall.

China has restored numerous architectural structures, but in most cases, they’ve managed to avoid destroying the structure in the process. During the three-month repair project, defensive works and guard towers were flattened, reports the Shanghai Daily.

Chinese netizens have expressed outrage over the wall. “Glad the Venus de Milo is not in China or someone would get her a new arm,” one user said in response to the restorations.

The State Administration of Cultural Heritage is supposedly looking into the repair work. If there are problems, this department will reportedly punish those responsible.
