Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich believes that Republican nominee Donald Trump would win against Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in November if the media stopped attacking him, according to a Sunday interview on ABC’s “This Week.”
“Without the unending, one-sided assault of the news media, Trump would be beating Hillary Clinton by 15 points,” Gingrich said. “So to suggest to us that people who are concerned about honest elections are somehow nutty, I think is a mistake.”
Gingrich added that he didn’t think that elections were rigged at the “precinct level,” but did say that it was important to have supporters monitor polling places in order to guard against the election getting “stolen.”
“I remember when Richard Nixon had the election stolen in 1960, and no serious historian doubts that Illinois and Texas were stolen. So to suggest that… you don’t have theft in Philadelphia is to deny reality,” Gingrich concluded.
Each major party is permitted to have a “poll watcher” representative at each voting location seated behind poll workers checking voters in during the election. Trump asked supporters during an August 12 rally in Pennsylvania to “go down to certain areas and watch and study,” to make sure that “people don’t come in and vote five times.”
