Police in a small German town are accused of covering up ongoing clashes between refugees and local nationalists.

Bautzen, a town of about 40,000 in eastern Germany, has been the scene of a race war in recent months. Locals cheered as a planned refugee shelter burned to the ground in February, and a large fight between about 20 refugees and 80 locals took place in the center of the town in September. (RELATED: Refugees And Locals Brawl In German Town [VIDEO])

The violence escalated Tuesday night when between 40 and 50 extremists “hunted” two refugees, according to a report from Die Zeit. One of the migrants was allegedly pushed off his bicycle and attacked with rocks.

Police denied the report, saying “nothing special” had happened besides a small group of people throwing rocks in the direction of the migrants.

Eyewitness reports published later in the day described how a large group of people in “right-wing extremist” attire “hunted down” the asylum seekers and used violence against them. Other similar incidents throughout the night were also reported.

It was further revealed that a newly-formed group called “Citizens Movement Bautzen” posted on Facebook to warn citizens that migrants were planning an attack in town. Police disregarded the message as “highly speculative,” which made local politicians question authorities.

“When it’s confirmed that refugees were hunted, threatened and attacked, that is of course an ‘exceptional situation‘, contrary to the depiction by police,” Left Party politician Juliane Nagel told Tagesspiegel Wednesday. “Racism is not normal, and [the state of] Saxony must also finally learn this.”
