A district in Munich, Germany is erecting a 12 ft. wall around a refugee center following a citizen initiative.

Locals in the suburb of Neuperlach Süd spoke up against the plans to house 160 unaccompanied minors next to a residential area. A compromise to build a “noise-canceling” wall was reached during the summer after a lengthy dispute.

The broader mass did not know of the wall until Deputy District Chairman Guido Bucholtz recently published a video of the construction. Bucholtz called it a “monster of a wall” and noted that it’s taller than the Berlin Wall.

WATCH:

Local authorities dismiss accusations of racism and say they welcome refugees to the community.

“Munich understands that refugees are housed in a welcoming culture,” Mayor Christine Strobl said, according to Die Welt. “The noise barrier is only on one side [of the property], there is no wall around the accommodation.”

Bucholtz and other opponents of the wall believe sound-proofing is a convenient excuse to cover up a xenophobic agenda.

“All parties involved should at least review the proceedings again,” Bucholtz told local newspaper Merkur. “I have one wish: that the future residents are welcomed.”
