Secretary of Defense Ash Carter issued a memo to all Department of Defense employees regarding the results of the presidential election Wednesday.

“Last night our fellow American citizens voted for a new President,” wrote Carter in the memo. “That it happened freely and peacefully is a testament to the great work of this Department.”

Carter noted how proud he was of Department of Defense employees for their professional attitudes during the election, focusing on “our sacred mission of providing security” instead of getting involved in politics. He added that he is committed to helping the next Commander-in-Chief’s transition, though he did not name President-elect Donald Trump.

“I know I can count on you to execute all your duties with the excellence our citizens know they can expect,” said Carter. “In the meantime, we must stay focused on our duty to confront our current challenges and any that might arise during this period.”
