More than 100,000 American sailors’ personal data was stolen in a recent security breach, the Navy revealed Wednesday.

The names and social security numbers for 134,386 sailors were lifted from a contractor’s laptop, according to Navy Times. The Navy was notified of the breach last month by Hewlett Packard Enterprise Services, which reported that one of the contractor’s laptops was “compromised.” The stolen data was pulled from the Career Waypoints Database, a Navy re-enlistment database.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) is conducting an investigation.

“The Navy takes this incident extremely seriously — this is a matter of trust for our sailors,” Navy personnel boss Vice Adm. Robert Burke said in a statement. “We are in the early stages of investigating and are working quickly to identify and take care of those affected by this breach.”

The latest breach is the second affiliated with the Navy’s use of Hewlett Packard’s services. The first was the 2013 breach by Iranian hackers, which was linked to poor contract management and a lack of HP security for unclassified Navy databases.

The Navy will notify affected sailors via phone, email, and traditional mail. Credit monitoring services are also being provided.

So far, NCIS has not detected any malicious use of the stolen data.
