Democratic Rep. Xavier Becerra was nominated to the position of California state attorney general last week, and Democrats believe Becerra is in a key position to fight Trump on immigration, according to a Monday report by NBC News.

California Democrats are proud of their state’s progressive policies, and are looking to their new attorney general to fight President Donald Trump on issues like immigration, energy policy, marriage equality, and healthcare.

“He could become the face of the California resistance, that is a very popular idea in a lot of places, that California Democrats are going to be the vanguard of opposition to the Trump administration,” professor at University of Southern California Roberto Suro told NBC.

Becerra has been a representative from California’s 34th Congressional District since 1993, and most recently served as a surrogate for the Clinton campaign.

Becerra is expressing an interest in resisting Trump’s proposal to end “sanctuary cities” which allow illegal residents to live there without prosecution. The issue is close to Becerra’s heart because he is a son of an immigrant mother from Mexico.

The role of state attorney general has a long history of fighting for progressive causes, like outgoing AG Kamala Harris, who fought the death penalty in California, as well as brokered a $25 billion settlement with mortgage lenders over improper foreclosure practices during the housing crisis.

“We know the Democratic party is going to have to go through a fairly significant reimagining of itself, and it’s going to be out of the majority in both the legislative and executive branches in Washington,” Suro said. “That doesn’t leave a lot of options so state governments and big state governments like California could be the place where the Democratic party exercises a voice and if that happens, then Becerra might be one of the people who is prominent in exercising that voice.”
