Fighting teenagers caused chaos in malls across the U.S. on Boxing Day.

False reports of gunshots combined with teenagers brawling ruined shoppers’ mall plans, reports The New York Times.

Teenagers caused North Carolina’s Cross Creek Mall to get shut down after a group fought in the mall’s food court. The police said they could not confirm that guns had been fired, though they had received multiple calls about gunshots.

A large fight occurred at Rosevelt Field Mall in New York, leading to an eventual stampede. About 70 calls were placed to 911 and several people had minor injuries treated.

Another Tennessee mall had 20 fireworks set off inside. The fighting continued in Tennessee as Oak Court Mall had to be closed down and Wolfchase Galleria had multiple calls made about gunshots.

“Somebody yelled ‘gun!’ and youths stampeded through the mall,” the Memphis Police Department police chief said. Officers arrested seven people.

Town Center Mall in Colorado had to be evacuated after a fight broke out in the mall’s food court. When police went to arrest a person involved in the fight, people began to surround the officer.

“When the officer went to arrest one of the subjects involved he was surrounded by a unruly crowd,” Sgt. Chris Amsler said. “As the officer was attempting to escort the arrestee to the Aurora Police Substation inside of the Town Center the crowd continued to advance on the officer and several other fights broke out.”

Five teens were eventually arrested.
