Liberals are suggesting President-elect Donald Trump is guilty of treason after President Obama announced new sanctions against Russia and Trump praised Vladimir Putin’s response to the sanctions.

The new sanctions were initiated Thursday in retaliation for Russia’s alleged interference in the presidential election, which prompted accusations that Trump was involved in this apparent subversion of American democracy.

On Friday, Trump tweeted praise of Putin for being “very smart” in his response to the White House’s sanctions.

That one tweet only encouraged more pundits on the Left to suggest Trump is guilty of treason.

Liberals have previously made the case that the next president is guilty of treason as well prior to this week. Legal scholar John Shattuck argued in The Boston Globe this month that Trump “raises the specter of treason” by not agreeing with claims that Russia hacked the election.

Last week, Salon declared that Trump’s path to the White House indicates he’s a traitor.

A White House petition started in July demanding Trump be tried for treason has over 31,000 signatures as of Friday afternoon.
