An elderly couple in West Texas set their home ablaze to lure police into a Mexican standoff they hoped would turn fatal, according to the arrest warrant affidavit.

Angered by how police were handling traffic in the small town of San Angelo, Texas, the couple lit their house on fire because they reportedly wanted to kill the officers who responded to the scene, Dallas News reports.

The Texas rangers identified the assailants as Gary Ray Wright and Brenda Joyce Wright after they were arrested on Jan. 13, 2017.

“Brenda Joyce Wright detailed how she and her husband had become frustrated with life,” the affidavit filed by San Angelo police stated. “The couple was dissatisfied over how a recent traffic accident had been investigated with the San Angelo Police Department. The couple viewed this as the ‘last straw’ and decided to put into motion a plan the couple had been planning for several weeks.”

When police arrived at the scene, they were met by Gary Wright wielding a rifle. Police immediately shot Wright, wounding him before taking him to a nearby hospital. Brenda Wrigh reportedly told authorities she was held up in the bathroom with a shotgun, but due to heavy smoke she was unable to fire a shot.

Brenda was immediately jailed, and Gary joined her after a 12-day stint in the hospital. The couple each face one count of attempted capital murder and two counts of arson.
