A Scranton, Penn., YMCA stopped showing the news in the gym because some members came close to fighting each other over it.
The YMCA sent out a letter explaining that some members were scared at how “boisterous” the arguments over politics had gotten, reports The Hill.
The letter said that the incidents “raised concerns about the safety, both physically and emotionally, of our members.” Several confrontations had occurred between members, according to the letter.
One gym member had to step in to prevent a situation from getting physical, according to the Scranton YMCA CEO.
“We’ve had members step forward saying they’ve felt a little uncomfortable with the arguments going on over politics,” Trish Fisher said, according to AOL.
Fisher added that they want people to feel comfortable in the gym.
“I’ve been here three years now and I really didn’t hear much about this until six months ago. So, we just want people to feel welcome here and I think this might help,” Fisher said.
Some gym members don’t agree with the ban, saying the arguments have been over exaggerated.
“I understand why they did it because there was a lot of controversy with a lot of people talking and arguing,” Susan Dimmick, a gym member, said. “There was a lot of arguing going on, but I don’t think it was right.”
For now, the ban on news is staying. The gym televisions will still play, but only show channels like The Weather Channel and ESPN.
