Baton Rouge officials launched an investigation into the Saturday night killing of a sheriff’s deputy.

The gunman killed the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy outside a barbershop when the deputy came to investigate a domestic call, reports WJTV.

“It’s a tragic night for the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office,” the Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks said. “We’re focused on working with the family, praying for the family and making sure that our deputies have the help and support that they need.”

The unidentified sheriff’s deputy died shortly after being taken to a local hospital. The alleged gunman suffered wounds from the shoot-out and is currently at a local hospital.

A second deputy who was there at the scene managed to escape with no injuries.

The event marks the second killing of an East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office employee in the past 12 months. Deputy Bradford Garafola was part of a group of Baton Rouge law enforcement officers ambushed by a gunman last July.
