Sea Lion Attacks Little Girl

There are two things I hate more than anything in the world: 1) Animals. 2) Canada. Put them together and it’s a recipe for disaster.

Chad Pawson, CBC News:

A Richmond [British Columbia] resident captured dramatic video on Saturday showing a sea lion grabbing a young girl by the dress and dragging her into the water off a dock at Steveston in Richmond, B.C…

Andrew Trites, the director of UBC’s Marine Mammal Research Unit, does not blame the animal for its behaviour in the video.

“My first reaction to the video is just how stupid some people can be to not treat wildlife with proper respect,” he said. “This was a male California sea lion. They are huge animals. They are not circus performers. They’re not trained to be next to people.”

If I had my way, that disgusting beast would be shot for laying its flippers on a human. But Andrew Trites is right. Let this be a lesson to all you animal-huggers out there: These things are not your friends. They’re not stuffed toys for your amusement. You do not live in a Disney cartoon.

I’m glad that little girl is okay. She’ll never turn her back on a wild animal again.
