The number of gender transition surgeries rose by almost 20% last year, a Monday report revealed.

Plastic surgeons completed more than 3,200 surgeries to help people transition to the opposite gender, an American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) report revealed.

“In the past few years, we’ve certainly seen an exponential increase in the number of individuals who are seeking surgical treatment for gender dysphoria, which is a disconnect between how an individual feels and what their anatomic characteristics are,” Loren Schechter, MD, a Chicago board-certified plastic surgeon, explained about the findings.

The plastic surgeries ranged from gender transition to getting certain body features fixed to resemble the opposite gender.

“There is no one-size-fits all treatment, and no one discipline can meet all the needs of an individual,” Dr. Schechter continued. “For example, plastic surgeons work with doctors who specialize in hormone therapy, urology and with mental health professionals who help patients through the emotional aspects of their transition.”

Some of the numbers released to the public by the ASPS were not “statistically valid,” and had to be pulled from the public, a spokesperson with the public relations department for the group explained.  The numbers concerning the amount of people who received breast augmentation, genitalia reconstruction etc were not valid in part because of the sample size.

Editor’s Note: Reuters has retracted their report because of questions surrounding some of the data provided by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. A spokesperson for ASPS told Retraction Watch the data in the press release reported by Reuters is valid, but that the organization did not want additional data that was provided to Reuters to be disseminated, because it’s not statistically valid.
